Founding

Bowie State University traces its origin to School #1, opened on January 9, 1865, by the Baltimore Association for the Moral and Educational Improvement of the Colored People in the African Baptist Church in Baltimore. The school opened at its present location in 1911 with about 60 students and Don Speed Smith Goodloe as the first Black man to head it as principal.
