Founding

Clark Atlanta University unites two institutions: Atlanta University, established in 1865 by the American Missionary Association and the nation's first institution to award graduate degrees to African Americans, and Clark College, established in 1869 as the nation's first four-year liberal arts college serving a primarily African American student body. Clark College was chartered and renamed Clark University in 1877.
