Founding

Dillard University's newly formed board of trustees proposed a charter for the institution on June 6, 1930, naming it for James Hardy Dillard. It united predecessor schools that had been founded to educate African Americans after emancipation, among them Straight College, which had been Straight University until 1905, and New Orleans University.
