Founding

Elizabeth City State University was established by House Bill 383 on March 3, 1891, sponsored by Hugh Cale, an African American member of the North Carolina General Assembly from Pasquotank County, as a normal school to train teachers. Between 1959 and 1963 it grew beyond teacher training, adding 11 academic majors.
