Founding

Fayetteville State University began as the Howard School, established on November 29, 1867, by seven Black citizens of Fayetteville to educate Black children and named for General Oliver Otis Howard of the Freedmen's Bureau. In 1877 the North Carolina Senate ratified an act establishing a teacher training institution for Black students, which the school became.
