Founding

J. F. Drake State Community and Technical College traces its start to 1961, when the state founded a group of two-year technical institutions to serve the career education needs of African Americans, and Huntsville State Vocational Technical School opened in 1962 with 27 students in four programs. In 1966 the school was renamed for Joseph Fanning Drake, the long-time president of Alabama A&M University.
