Founding
LeMoyne-Owen College was founded at Camp Shiloh in 1862 as Lincoln Chapel, an elementary school opened by the American Missionary Association to educate freedmen and people who had escaped enslavement. It became a junior college in 1924 and a four-year college in 1930, and LeMoyne merged with Owen College to form LeMoyne-Owen College in 1968.
