Founding

Lincoln University was founded by the soldiers and officers of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantry regiments, who formally established Lincoln Institute on January 14, 1866. The school opened on September 17, 1866, to a first class of two students in an old frame building in Jefferson City.
