Founding

Lincoln University received its charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on April 29, 1854, as the Ashmun Institute, and states that it is the nation's first degree-granting historically Black college or university. In its centennial year, 1953, it amended its charter to grant degrees to women.
