Founding

Morris Brown College traces its founding to a resolution introduced on January 5, 1881, at the African Methodist Episcopal Church's North Georgia Annual Conference at Big Bethel, calling for a school in Atlanta for Black boys and girls. The State of Georgia chartered Morris Brown College of the AME Church in May 1885.
