Founding
North Carolina Central University was chartered in 1909 as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race and founded in 1910 by James E. Shepard. The State of North Carolina purchased it in 1923 and renamed it the Durham State Normal School for Negroes, and the legislature granted university status under the present name in 1969.
