Founding
Selma University's first trustees were elected by the Alabama Baptist convention at a meeting in Mobile in 1874, and its first classes were held at Saint Phillips Street Baptist Church of Selma in 1878. The legislature incorporated the school in 1881 as the Alabama Baptist Normal and Theological School of Selma.
