Founding

Southern University opened its doors in New Orleans in 1880 under Legislative Act 87, with a $10,000 appropriation and 12 students, after P. B. S. Pinchback, T. T. Allain, T. B. Stamps, and Henry Demas presented the vision at the Louisiana constitutional convention. Legislative Act 118 relocated the university in 1912 to Scotlandville, and the new Southern University opened there, in Baton Rouge, in 1914 with a share of a $50,000 land-grant appropriation.
