Founding

Texas Southern University traces its origins to the Houston Colored Junior College, funded by the Houston Public School Board in 1927. The Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 140 on March 3, 1947, providing for a law school for Black students in Houston and a university around it, and the university opened in September 1947 with 2,300 students.
