Founding

Virginia Union University was founded in 1865 by the American Baptist Home Mission Society, shortly after Union troops took control of Richmond at the end of the Civil War, to give newly emancipated freedmen an education. Hartshorn Memorial College, a women's college established in Richmond in 1883, became part of the university in 1932.
