Founding

Voorhees University began as the Denmark Industrial School, founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright and modeled on Tuskegee. A $5,000 gift from New Jersey philanthropist Ralph Voorhees and his wife bought the land and first building, and the school opened in 1902 with Wright as principal.
