Founding
Wilberforce University was founded in 1856, at a time when the education of African Americans was both socially prohibited and illegal. After a temporary closure during the Civil War, it was re-incorporated in 1863 by Bishop Daniel A. Payne of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
